A TOWERING TREASURE OF COLONIAL MEXICO

The Puebla Cathedral, officially Catedral Basílica de
Puebla, is one of the oldest, tallest, and most
beautiful cathedrals in Mexico. It’s a masterpiece of
faith, art, and architecture right in the heart of
Puebla’s historic center.

BAROQUE BEAUTY

The cathedral blends
Renaissance, Baroque,
and Neoclassical styles,
inside and out!

SUPER TALL TOWERS

Its bell towers are among
the tallest in Mexico,
standing at 70 meters
(230 feet).

AN UNESCO GEM

It’s part of Puebla’s
UNESCO World Heritage
downtown.

GUARDED BY ANGELS

Around the atrium of the
Puebla Cathedral are 58
figures of angels who
guard it day and night.

WITH THE HELP OF ANGELS

Legend says that the
largest bell in the
Cathedral, called Santa
María de la Concepción,
was placed there by
angels because it was too
heavy for the workers.

THE NITIATIVE

Construction of the
Puebla cathedral began
at the initiative of Friar
Julián Garcés, Bishop of
Tlaxcala, between 1536
and 1539.

BAROQUE BEAUTY

The cathedral has two
towers, each 70 meters
high, but only the one
located to the north has
10 bells: two large, two
medium, three small, and
three smaller.

SUPER TALL TOWERS

Puebla Cathedral was
consecrated in 1649 by
Bishop Juan de Palafox y
Mendoza before it was
fully completed. This act
made it the first
sumptuous temple in
America.

THE SHAPE OF A LATIN CROSS

It was designed to be in
the shape of a Latin
cross and has five
naves, two towers, and
the main altar is
octagonal while the
others are oriented
toward the cardinal
points.
