The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel is the iconic pink church that towers over the heart of San Miguel de Allende. The church is made from pink cantera stone, which glows beautifully at sunrise and sunset.
ITS SPIKY TOWERS CAME IN LATER
The church was built in a Baroque style, but between 1880 and 1890, at the request of the bishop, the façade was remodeled.
INSPIRED BY POSTCARDS
Between 1880 and 1890 Ceferino Gutiérrez, a local bricklayer, based the design of the new façade on European cathedrals drawings, and postcards.
NAMED AFTER A PROTECTOR
It’s dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, the town’s patron saint.
LOCAL PINK QUARRY
The façade was crafted from local pink quarry, which gives it its characteristic color and beauty.
ARTISTIC WEALTH
Inside, it guards oil paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as altars and objects of veneration and form part of its artistic wealth.
MASS OFFICIATED BY MIGUEL HIDALGO
It is said that Miguel Hidalgo, a key figure in the independence movement, came to officiate in the parish of San Miguel Arcángel.
